MLK Dream Center

Environmental Graphics & Public Design

The MLK Dream Center represents a transformative redevelopment of the former King Center in South Bend — reimagined as a modern community hub designed to serve and inspire future generations.

As part of the City of South Bend’s Venues Parks & Arts team, Rutendo Jairosi of Jairosi Graphic Design contributed to the visual identity of the new space through a series of environmental and public-facing design elements.

The Challenge

The goal was to create visual elements that:

  • Reflected the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  • Inspired community members across all ages

  • Enhanced the experience of the newly built space

  • Created a strong visual presence both inside and around the center

The design needed to feel uplifting, accessible, and deeply rooted in purpose, while working across large-scale physical environments.

The Approach

The design approach focused on clarity, inspiration, and storytelling at scale.

Visual elements were developed to guide visitors both emotionally and physically, from the surrounding streets into the interior spaces of the center.

A key theme centered on aspiration and forward movement, using bold visuals and minimal, impactful language to communicate the center’s mission.

Environmental & Public Design

A series of environmental and public-facing design elements were developed, including:

  • Interior wall graphics for the basketball court and gym

  • Large-scale environmental visuals within community spaces

  • Flagpole banner system lining the street leading to the center

The banner series featured original illustrations, including a custom-rendered image of the Dream Center and an illustrated depiction of Dr. King leading a crowd toward the space.

Each banner carried a single, powerful word:

“Dream.”

This created a rhythmic and memorable visual experience, guiding visitors toward the center while reinforcing its purpose.

Design System

The visual language balanced bold simplicity with symbolic meaning.

Key considerations included:

  • Designing for large-scale visibility and readability

  • Creating visuals that resonate across diverse audiences

  • Ensuring cohesion between interior and exterior elements

  • Using illustration to add warmth, accessibility, and storytelling

The result was a system that felt both welcoming and aspirational, supporting the center’s role as a community anchor.

Outcome

The completed environmental graphics contributed to a cohesive and engaging experience throughout the Dream Center.

The work helped:

  • Establish a strong visual identity for the new space

  • Enhance the atmosphere within key community areas

  • Create a memorable and inviting approach to the building
