Raclin Murphy Museum of Art

Retail & Visitor Experience Design

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame is a premier cultural institution designed to engage visitors through art, education, and community programming.

Jairosi Graphic Design was engaged to develop a series of retail and visitor-facing materials, extending the museum’s visual identity into both its gift shop and educational experience.

The Challenge

The goal was to create materials that:

  • Aligned with the museum’s visual identity and curatorial tone

  • Enhanced the visitor experience beyond the gallery space

  • Translated fine art into accessible, engaging formats

  • Felt thoughtful, collectible, and cohesive

The work needed to balance artistic integrity with usability, serving both retail and educational purposes.

The Approach

The design approach focused on extending the museum’s identity into tangible, take-home, and educational formats.

Each piece was designed to feel intentional and connected to the museum experience — whether guiding visitors through the space or allowing them to carry a piece of that experience with them.

Typography, layout, and composition were carefully considered to maintain clarity while honoring the visual language of the institution.

Retail & Visitor Materials

A collection of materials was developed across both retail and educational touchpoints:

Gift Shop Merchandise

  • Bookmark series

  • Postcard set

  • Greeting card collection

Visitor Experience Design

  • The Family Guide brochure designed to help families with young children navigate the museum and engage more deeply with its offerings.

  • The Teaching Guide informs schools or art scholastic groups of the Museum's many education programs.

Each item was designed to be both functional and visually compelling, reinforcing the museum’s identity in everyday interactions.

Design System

The visual system balanced refinement, accessibility, and cohesion.

Key considerations included:

  • Creating designs that feel aligned with a fine arts environment

  • Ensuring clarity and usability for a broad audience, including families

  • Maintaining consistency across multiple formats and scales

  • Designing products that function as both keepsakes and communication tools

The result is a collection of materials that feel both curated and approachable, enhancing the museum experience across touchpoints.

Outcome

The final materials extend the museum’s presence beyond its walls, supporting both visitor engagement and retail offerings.

The work contributes to:

  • A more enriched and guided visitor experience

  • Cohesive and elevated gift shop merchandise

  • Increased opportunities for audience connection beyond the gallery
